The First Pop in Every Kerala Kitchen — Pure Black Mustard Seeds
Eastern Mustard Seed Black (കടുക്) is a pantry staple that no Kerala kitchen can do without. These small, round black mustard seeds carry a sharp, nutty pungency that blooms the moment they hit hot oil — that signature pop and crackle that signals the start of a great dish. Clean, whole, and carefully sourced, Eastern Black Mustard Seeds bring consistent quality and flavour to your everyday cooking.
From the tempering of sambar and chutneys to the base of pickles, curries, and stir-fries, mustard seeds are the quiet foundation of South Indian and Kerala cuisine — and Eastern delivers them at their freshest.
Why You'll Love It

- Bold, nutty flavour — pungent raw, warm and aromatic when tempered
- Versatile — used in tempering, pickling, grinding into pastes, and spice blends
How to Use
Heat oil in a pan until hot. Add mustard seeds and cover immediately — they will splutter and pop within seconds. Once the popping subsides, add curry leaves, dried red chilli, or other tempering spices. Use this tadka as the flavour base for sambar, chutneys, kootu, thoran, aviyal, and more. For pickles, grind mustard seeds into a coarse paste with vinegar or water.
